Considering the number of mistakes that were pointed out to me) Ive also been spending a lot of time on this site, cramming various scraps of information in my head and hoping itll be enough for when I land in Frankfurt Airport with no idea where anyone or anything is. Despite my complaints and lack of German eloquence, however, Im truly looking forward to my trip to Deutschland. Im going with four other girls as part of a MISTI (MIT Science and Technology Initiatives) program called Highlights for High Schools . The five of us will be teaching at various schools all over Germany, using curriculums we designed earlier this year. In just over a week, Ill be able to tell how much bio and physics I managed to retain from freshman year; Im pretty sure these last two weeks spent relaxing at home, re-reading the Harry Potter books, and playing frisbee pretty much every day havent helped on the retention front. In addition to holding lessons, the other girls and I hope to do quite a bit of sight-seeing. We especially have our eyes set on the Neuschwanstein Castle: Isnt it beautiful? And I really want to do a segway tour of Berlin, though Id probably fall off the segway: At the end of the trip, I might even get to hop over to another country for a litttle while: Look familiar? To summarize ~ (1) Ahhh, I get to go to Europe for the first time in my life! (2) Teachings funnn. (3) German chocolate? Yes, please. (4) MISTI pays for it all :) Thanks to the wonderful Erin who works in the MIT-Germany office, Ill have housing, food, a stipend, and a fantabulous experience one thatll certainly need some blogging! Visioning the Scholarship Boy In â€Å"When We Dean Awaken: Writing as Re-Vision,† Rich describes the dilemma we all face as humans in our search for identity. Are we to allow the forces of the past to define us, or are we to transcend these forces creating a new identity? For Rich her struggle with a male dominated society causes her to redefine herself through writing. As the title of her piece suggests, Rich uses â€Å"writing as Re-vision,† a way to rewrite the past, effectively breaking free of tradition. In â€Å"The Achievement Of Desire,† Rodriguez is faced with a similar crisis of identity, when faced with Hoggart’s concept of the â€Å"scholarship boy†. While this concept seems to represent the hold of authority over Rodriguez, he instead uses it in his search for identity, breaking the hold of authority over him. Rich writes, â€Å"until we understand the assumptions in which we are drenched we cannot know ourselves†¦. †(Rich 18). In much the same way Rodriguez must understand the assumptions imposed by the concept of the â€Å"scholarship boy† in his quest for self-identity. When examining Rodriguez’s struggle the following questions arise: Has Rodriguez broken free of the academic authorities in his life, which attempt to rigidly define his identity? Is he a â€Å"scholarship boy,† or something more? When contemplating these questions, we come to a surprising result; Rodriguez had used his quest for identity as a catalyst, allowing him to solidify his own philosophy of education. Throughout the achievement of desire Rodriguez uses the concept of the scholarship boy to express his philosophy of education. While at first we see the scholarship boy as a mere caricature, eventually it begins to increase in depth, until finally we realize that Rodriguez is in fact talking about himself. Rodriguez writes: â€Å"In large part, however, the reason he is such a bad student is because he realizes more often and more acutely than most other students – than Hoggart himself – that education requires radical self-reformation. †(529) In this passage we begin to see pieces of Rodriguez’s philosophy of education. For Rodriguez, a successful education exists as a force of inevitable change. This change often pulls one away from their native culture, integrating them with society. Rodriguez states, â€Å" Radical educationalists meanwhile complain that ghetto schools oppress students by trying to mold them†¦the truer critique would be just the reverse: not that schools change ghetto students too much†¦they change most students barely at all. †(529) For Rodriguez a proper education inevitably â€Å"molds† the student. The emphasis in the American educational system on â€Å"creativity and originality† ultimately hinders the success of the student. Rodriguez furthers his philosophy on education with his views on imitation. For Rodriguez imitation i â€Å"From the story of the scholarship boy there is no specific pedagogy to glean†¦ he makes clear that education is a long unglarorous even demeaning process†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦. Great quote to set up another paragraph For rodriguez, education need not be a pleasurable process. While thescholorship boy seems a negative story in reality it is a necessary one in terms of education. For the student of immigrant parents to become educated he must be ripped from his native culture Rodriguez reveals; â€Å"A primary reason for my success in the classroom was that I couldn’t forget that schooling was changing me and separating me from the life I enjoyed before becoming a student. †(516) During the beginning of his life, Rodriguez lives as the â€Å"scholarship boy†. Rodriguez writes, â€Å"I lacked a point of view when I read. Rather I read in order to acquire a point of view. †(527). Furthermore Rodriguez writes â€Å"I knew too much (and not enough) to be able to write anything but sentences that were overly cautious, timid, strained brittle under the heavy weight of footnotes and qualifications. I seemed unable to dare a passionate statement†(531). After these realizations Rodriguez searches for an answer to his shortcomings in academic literature coming face to face with Hoggart’s concept of the â€Å"scholarship boy†. For the first time Rodriguez begins to question himself, framing these inquiries through the concept of the â€Å"scholarship boy† Through questioning himself Rodriguez finally comes to terms with himself allowing a synthesis to occur, applying his skills of abstraction to his problem of identity. Rodriguez writes â€Å"And yet, positively: the ability to consider experience so abstractly allowed me to shape into desire what would otherwise have remained indefinite. †. Rodriguez takes this synthesis further concluding â€Å"If, because of my schooling, I had grown culturally separated from my parents, my education finally had given me ways of speaking and caring about this fact†(532). Rodriguez goes further to illustrate his transformation, by contrasting his thoughts as a â€Å"scholarship boy† with his thoughts in the present. Rodriguez writes â€Å" Faithfully, I wrote down all that they said. I memorized it: â€Å"The praise of the unlettered by the highly educated is the primary theme of ‘elitist’ literature† But, â€Å"the importance of the praise given the unsolitary, richly passionate and spontaneous life is that it simultaneously reflects the value of a reflective life. †(532). To Rodriguez this quote falls perfectly in line with his own conclusions from his experience, the wisdom of learning to balance the two opposing forces in his life. Yet as a scholarship boy these words mean nothing to him. Rodriguez writes, â€Å"But there was no way for any of it to mean very much to me. I was a scholarship boy at the time, busily laddering my way up the rungs of education. †(532). Throughout â€Å"Achievement of Desire†, Rodriguez maps his transformation from a â€Å"scholarship boy†, to someone with his own authority. It is possible to see a similar transformation occur for Rich when we examine â€Å"When We Dead Awaken: Writing as Re-Vision†. For Rich the final step of this transformation is through her act of writing about her struggle. Rich writes, â€Å"Moreover if the imagination is to transcend and transform experience it has to question, to challenge, to conceive of alternatives, perhaps to the very life you are living at the moment. †¦. For writing is re-naming. † (Rich 23). It would seem that a final piece of evidence for Rodriguez’s transformation is â€Å"Achievement of Desire† itself. This programme should be recommended for many nations in Europe and other parts of the world still struggling to provide multicultural education to their citizens. Although the hospital works diligently to provide quality care to its patients it is failing in many areas due to understaffed and overworked nursing staff. Mandated to keep up government regulations, the hospital understands the importance of not compromising quality even though it has had to minimize quantity in staff. The hospital requires nurses to come up with strategies to be implemented to help improve not only working conditions and quality control but patient care and ideas to help increase personal job performance. Over the last eight years the hospital has enforced some of the changes suggested but it finds itself still with the issue of nurses who feel that they are overextending themselves. Nursing staff is still in the position of trying to keep up with the demand of continuous educational conditioning an d development while performing on the job tasks in addition to extra curricular activities. Overview of Firm Competitive Advantage In order to have a firm competitive advantage an organization has to possess something unique that its competition does not have. What makes one different from another? This question is what separates groups and classes and makes one stand out among the rest. At Los Rayos they have qualified staff just not enough of it. Partnering with another major medical facility was a good business move as it can serve the purpose of showing Los Rayos ways it can improve on its functions within the facility. A normal turnover rate for hospitals is at 14% while Los Rayos is at 21%. Changes in an industry can affect bases and balance among it (Porter, 1985). Job satisfaction will make the difference on the advantage another medical facility will gain when nurses are looking upon where they would like to settle for a career. Some nurses will take a salary cut or drive further in order to work within a medical facility that offers them more than an opportunity to use their credentials. As the medical environment is forever changing one thing that may give a hospital a firm competitive advantage would be their values. Having an expectation of learning within the organization lets nursing staff know that they will be encouraged and required to continue to advance in their field and stay current on all resources and advancements in medicine. Having a competitive advantage means that you make it more difficult for competition and shake up the level playing field. According to Michael Porter (1985), if an organization can achieve and maintain differentiation they will be an above average performer in their industry and exceed competition. In order to be successful in this strategy Los Rayos will have to identify attributes and qualities among their nursing staff that are different from their rivals who are the organizations who benefit from their high turnover rate. They need to identify the factors that contribute the turnovers and come up solutions to keep nursing staff from leavi ng and also keep staff happy on the job. Problem statement The problem with Los Rayos medical facility is management does not resourcefully use staff, which leads to a high number in turnovers. The facility is understaffed and overworked and they promoted housekeepers to health techs and provided no skill training leaving nurses to double work as they would need to perform the patient care tasks that the health techs: were promoted to do. The hospital also dropped moral amongst staff as they took away appreciation events such as the employee picnic and Christmas party that gives staff something to look forward to every year. It is highly noted that when employees feel they are appreciated on the job it reflects in their job performance. The hospital reduced its nursing staff to double patients per nurse and increased shifts from 8 hour to 12 hour. This tedious and exhausting work schedule not only creates a hostile work environment as staff are reluctant to go the extra mile or over achieve for patients and colleagues. The hospital requires a lot from its nursing staff and where a raise or an on the job leisure activity would have compensated for the tedious job detail, management has taken those tokens away. Alternative Solutions/Opportunities a.) Create a rewards system to retain staff -there should be a work environment where staff have materials and training to properly perform tasks and should be awarded for productive performance. Evaluations should be done quarterly on staff to review job performance and adhere to what can be done better but also praise what has been done successfully. During this process not only is staff being rewarded for their accomplishments but also they acquire new knowledge and education that helps expand their skill and personal development. i) Build moral in the workplace ii) Cause discord among staff b.) Regular Shifts- Staff has become overwhelmed by the hours they spend on the job. If they had shorter shifts they would have time to reprogram and detox and come back refreshed eliminating turnover and burnouts i.) Management has to recognize the nurses core commitment is to provide quality care to their patients and they need to help reduce job related stress by ensuring that supporting staff such as health techs are properly trained and skilled in work related duties. Nurses need to feel important, valued, and appreciated by their organization, as they love their job and they just want working conditions to improve. Action Plan Moving to implement the rewards system and shorter shifts for staff should take place immediately to ensure that staff understands management understands their concerns and have worked to rectify their issues. To implement successful changes, management must play an active role in the entire change process. He gives Laertes permission to return to France but will not allow Hamlet to go to Wittenburg. Hamlet feels alone and is upset that his mother married so shortly after her husband's death. The guards arrive and tell Hamlet about the ghost and Hamlet agrees to join them that night in search of the ghost, his father.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  1.3 At Polonius's room, Laertes says good-bye to his sister Ophelia and tells her not to trust Hamlet. Polonius arrives and says good-bye Laertes and offers him advice.
